We'd love to have you!
What you mention is the same reason people are starting their own mini-confs instead of attending MySQLCon. Percona is an example of this.
The reality is sun is not a community player. They never have been. The conference to them is all about promoting Sun.
For Sun and MySQL, the word "community" specifically means users that are not paying customers. This definition is in their slides. So by extension, community events are for their users, and have the purpose of converting some of them to customers.
In the PostgreSQL realm, we often use the word "community" to mean all people with an active interest in our software and our cause, and we typically invite all of them to participate in "community events". But Sun has a different definition, which is why misunderstandings like this can arise.
Hi Robert,
I am sorry to see that CommunityOne 2009 attendees will miss to see you present live in action. I probably think the committee did not recognize the potential here. Next time maybe we should have some "lobbying" activity Regards, Jignesh
Robert,
No, I'm not going. Neither is anyone else I know. What happened was that Sun sacked all of the open source staff who worked at Sun and organized the conference last year, and assigned it to the same nincompoops who run JavaOne*. I'm advising everyone I know to steer clear of the event; I didn't bother to submit anything. (* for that matter, unless you work for Sun or Oracle, don't bother submitting any talks to JavaOne)
Robert,
Indeed, this is why we (Percona) organized our own conference. The numbers of speakers at Sun's conferences and where they're from tells the story far more clearly than anything else could. There's obviously an opportunity to do something about this |
