Re: OOo. What do you think IBM Lotus Symphony is based on? I would imagine most linux distros would love IBM to do something similar to eclipse with OOo (ie create a structure and framework to encourage others to participate). Sun's interactions with the OOo community haven't been a bright point.
Oh interesting! If IBM did take that route that could be a nice boon for OOo. In fact, it might be a better fit than with Java. Thanks for the pointer.
java: IBM's history with languages is to embrace and change; COBOL being the most well known instance. Since many consider java to be today's COBOL, I expect that there would end up being IBM java and everybody else's. That's nearly true now, if you want to use WebSphere.
AIX: early *nix (may be first) with journaled file system, logical volume manager and got POWER architecture on the map. And SMIT was something else in 1990. MySql: the main thing is that InnoDB is owned by Oracle, and MySql without it is little more than a SQL parser fronting the file system; calling this an RDBMS is an insult to the ones that really are. Drizzle looks to be MySql 3.0 done over. How this could honestly be purveyed by IBM as a RDBMS is a problem. OTOH, IBM stuffed IMS (in the guise of pureXML) into DB2, so they haven't any shame. They'll pander to the lowest silliness.
Great analysis and post. I don't see the buy as good for anyone. The employees would get screwed.
